Journey and destination

I find myself in a journey again. Another train journey and 8+ hours to spend doing something. I slept for some time, watched a movie for a while and finally, ended up here. What is important? The journey or the destination? Such an old question. But, still it gives you a lot to think about, a lot to reflect and remember.

I thought, the destination is more important. It is the most important part of any journey.  Without a destination, your journey won’t have any direction. Without a destination, a journey would’t be a journey. It would be just wandering around aimlessly. When you say someone that you are going on a journey, the first question they ask back is, “Where are you going?”. All the other questions about how and when come after that.

And suddenly, another thought crossed my mind. There were those journeys in which I enjoyed the travel, the places I saw and people I met before I even reached my destination. Those journeys themselves were important, even without the destination. Maybe, how we go is more important than where we go.

My mind was like the famous Tamil expression “மதில் மேல் பூனை” (mathil meethu poonai meaning, cat on the fence that could jump to either side). I still was unable to come to a clear conclusion. Two kids near me were flipping a coin and playing heard or tails. I was watching then and suddenly a thought popped in my head.

Maybe, journey and destination are like two sides of a coin. Both are to be present for the coin to be valid. I doesn’t mean one side is more important than the other. I have often heard people say, “The mean is as important as the end”.

When I thought more, I felt, In some cases, you might have to go through a wonderful journey to a destination that is not so pleasant or undertake a difficult and unpleasant journey to a beautiful destination. Whatever the situation is, try to enjoy the things that come your way.

Think about the beautiful destination, when you are having a tough time in your journey. Think about all the experience and enjoyment of the journey, if you are not happy with your destination. It doesn’t matter if it is the journey or the destination. All you have to do is find reasons to be happy, like those kids flipping coin happily.

Peace

My friend and I were having a discussion on international politics and terrorism. By the end of the discussion, my friend asked, ” why don’t people let go of all this war and come to peace?” This made me think.  Why are we not achieving peace even when almost all countries in the world want it? There are so many international organisations working towards peace and still there is a lot of violence in this world. So many questions bubbled up in my mind.

Google says that peace is ‘absence of disturbance’ or ‘a period of no war’. Disturbance or war is a result of conflict in opinion between two different people, state or nation. Peace according to a group of people might not be considered as peace by some other community. That is why it is hard for people to come together and agree on certain issues around the world.

As long as we don’t respect the rights and customs of people around us, it is almost impossible to attain the peace we all want.Trying enforce your peace on others itself is an act of war. This is where some of the world’s strongest nations fail. Some nations say that they are on a war against terrorism and encourage terrorist indirectly.

At this juncture, I must ask the important questions. Who is funding these anti-peace  organisations? Are governments supporting them? Are people supporting them? What are the leaders who we elect or select to preserve our peace doing? What is war against terrorism doing? Is it really bring peace? It is really important for us think about our current position in this quest for peace.

To end, we should understand that we are all different and we come from very different backgrounds. I believe true peace will be achieved only when we respect the ways  of others. The world would be a better place if we learn to accept our differences and try not to change others to our convenience.

May peace be with us all!!!

The chess board

Many a times I used to wonder,
What it is like to be a chess board.
Watching two sides have a go,
Unable to do anything, but watch.

It all seems like blunder,
when people fight over your head.
What does the chess board think?
Am I of any worth?

It all seemed so absurd,
Until someone gave an advice.
“Be like the chess board”, they said,
Making me like always ponder, “what does that even mean?”

“Be like the chess board,
controlling all the moves.
Be like the chess board,
Indispensable for the game.

Be like the chess board,
Clean with just black and white.
Be like the chess board,
Unharmed by all the mess around.”

Many a times I used to wonder,
What it is like to be a chess board.
Now I have my answer,
Wanting to be be like one.

What would you do?

When every way is shut,
Where would you go?
When stuck in a rut,
What would you do?

When everyone is gone,
Where would you go?
When you are left alone,
What would you do?

When everything is lost,
Where would you go?
When seen a shade of past,
what would you do?

When every plan fails,
Where would you go?
When there’s no wind for your sails,
What would you do?

‘Home’ is where I would go,
When there is nowhere to go.
All I can is ‘redo’,
When bad times seem to brew.

Why take a Resolution

Saswat kumar Dash

On every occasion that seems it could be a juncture, I take a resolution; may it be Quit smoking or not to neglect studies, to help the needy or not to get angry or to control the unnecessary expenses. All of those sounds relevant at that moment, not only to you but also to people close by. On this, it strikes a saying: ” Every New year the resolution to quit smoking goes up in Smoke”. Well, I know it’s hilarious but it is the sore truth. Adding, a recent study by the University of Scranton research suggests that just 8% of people achieve their New year’s Goal.

Does it mean taking resolution are mere talking ? OR Shall we not believe in such Ideas.

I’ll tell you my take, I keep it simple – for the least time – making it obvious and not keeping my friends and family…
